Do you know what a “fire sale” is? or even how close we are to experiencing one? With the world now deeply ingrained in the internet and technology, it obviously opens up a whole new world where chaos can rain down on us with the stroke of the ENTER key.
So for a quick lesson…..
- Stage 1: Shutting down all transportation systems; such as traffic lights, railroad lines, subway system and airport systems.
We’ve already started to see this happen but typically reported as an “internal computer glitch” that causes airlines to abruptly cancel flights ready to depart. All major cities, and even smaller ones, have their systems controlled by computer systems which help them predict traffic patterns and adjust to avoid congestion. You’ve seen it easily manipulated in fictional movies but how easy would it be to lock up several blocks of a major city by penetrating their inadequate system controls and flipping the switch?
Now in 2018, we are starting to see on the news hackers infiltrating 911 systems and shutting them down causing a panic. Or a false nuclear bomb alert in Hawaii. The 911 hacks actually left municipalities resorting to old school phone systems, pen, and paper.
So what would happen if someone or some organization corrupted the 911 system to create chaos in a city or a distraction leading to dangerous situations for first responders? or simply shutting it down….
- Stage 2: Disable the financial systems; including Wall Street, banks and financial records.
Considering people will still be, for years, regaining control of their personal information from the Equifax hack or the LexusNexus hack and considering that most of Wall Street markets are now controlled by computers and algorithms, making them ripe for the picking. It’s not hard to fathom that our markets could be, if not completely shut down, but disrupted badly enough to create panic around the country as investors see their money evaporate before their eyes. Watching as their credit scores and personal information is wiped out paralyzing populations from even using a debit card. The country would quickly plunge into another depression where only cash, gold, and silver, and/or bartering would rule.
- Stage 3: Turning off public utility systems, such as electricity, gas lines, telecommunications and satellite systems.
Just like the Raptor in Jurassic Park, systematically testing the perimeter electric fences for weaknesses, we are learning that Russia (among others) have been testing our country’s electrical grid. With the loss of power due to previous “rolling black outs” or severe weather events, we all bear witness on the news to the immediate breadown in social stability. People suddenly taking to the streets smashing and stealing anything and everything they want with little ability for authorities to control. Especially if their 911 system could also be down!!!
Now take that all in….
Recent malware attacks like Stuxnet and Flame seems like a first step in the direction of fire-sale. Stuxnet is a computer worm discovered in June 2010. Stuxnet initially spreads via Microsoft Windows, and targets Siemens industrial software and equipment. While it is not the first time that hackers have targeted industrial systems it is the first discovered malware that spies on and subverts industrial systems, and the first to include a programmable logic controller (PLC) rootkit.
The program used to sabotage the computer systems at Iran’s nuclear facilities, which carried the Stuxnet malware, was known as “Olympic Games”. Part of it became public after it accidentally unleashed the Stuxnet worm across the global Internet.
Recently Kaspersky discovered Flame backdoor. Flame does not sabotage systems instead it steals information from confidential information from input boxes, spies on user’s conversation. Flame can log keystrokes, screenshots of applications. Flame is extremely complex to analyze, it is said to be the most complex spyware of all times.
Such attacks can have huge financial impact on companies and countries. As per info security magazine Cybercrime costs companies an average of $214,000 per attack. Recent attacks by hacker group Anonymous cost Sony estimated 171 million dollars.
Welcome to the 1800s…
So, you have no power, no current means of communication because you, as all of us, are ingrained into modern cell phone technology, markets are collapsing as banks close their doors whether you have money there or not (already happening), and no one out there to help defend you. How easy would it really be to, instead of waging war against a country, causing it to come apart at the seems from within and vulnerable to being easily overthrown with little resistance due to the desperation of its citizens.
We are not far from a technological apocalypse. Don’t be fooled into thinking it won’t happen. It will and your worst nightmare’s will be at your doorstep. Start preparing now on communicating without technology, storing your wealth without any bank or financial institution, and protecting yourself from the desperate souls who are searching for anyone or anything to help them.
